Before we begin to discuss search engine optimisation we need to first look at how the search engines work.

How do Search Engines work?

A Search Engine is comprised of three main elements:

1. THE SPIDER

First is the spider (also known as a crawler). The spider visits a web page, reads it, and then follows links to other pages within the site. This is what it means when someone refers to a site being "spidered" or "crawled." The spider returns to the site on a regular basis, such as every month or two, to look for changes.

2. THE INDEX

Everything the spider finds goes into the second part of a search engine, the index. The index (sometimes called the catalogue) is like a giant book containing a copy of every web page that the spider finds. If a web page changes, then this book is updated with the new information.

Sometimes it can take a while for new pages or changes that the spider finds to be added to the index. Thus, a web page may have been "spidered" but not yet "indexed." Until it is indexed (added to the index) it is not available to those searching with that search engine. Increasingly, pages that have been submitted are indexed, but the rest of the site will not be spidered for some time.

3. THE SEARCH ENGINE SOFTWARE & USER INTERFACE

Search engine software is the third part of a search engine. This is the program that sifts through the millions of pages recorded in the index to find matches to a search and then ranks them in order of what it believes is most relevant.

MANY SITES NEVER GET 'SPIDERED' AND THEREFORE NEVER GET FOUND

Forrester Research estimates that there are 500 to 600 million pages on the Internet. That number is growing fast. However, the largest search engine, AltaVista, only has about 150 million pages indexed (about 27% of the whole Web), with Excite and Lycos at only about 50 million indexed (about 10% of the whole Web).

In recent times
none of the search engines increased size significantly,
despite the fact that the web continued to grows.

To a webmaster, these are shocking statistics.

The two main reasons why relatively few pages are indexed are:

The Web is growing faster than the engines can keep up with.
Many webmasters do not know how to design and submit their pages correctly.

Getting recognised and then staying well indexed in a search engine needs a lot more work than most people assume it does.

WHAT OUR SPECIALISED OPTIMISATION PROCESS CAN DO FOR YOU

Our optimisation process is generally combined with our design service for Web Site Development.

It is best to implement the features into the site as it is being developed.
Trying to optimise an existing site can take a lot of redevelopment.

We can highly optimise your site for the major search engines, so that it will bring more customers to you.

The first thing we need to do is make sure that all your web pages can be reached from your home page within three clicks. Most engines will only crawl to three levels deep when indexing your site.

All of your pages will be hand-coded by us with special keywords and key-phrases that will help your pages come up close to the top in search engine results for those keywords and phrases.

Your pages will also include many other special techniques to guarantee high rankings, with optimised descriptions of each of the pages that will help draw searchers attention to your site above others.

All of the pages on your site will be hand-submitted to the popular search engines taking advantage of each engine's individual features and requirements.

For the major engines, you should never leave the submission process to automated programs and services. Major search engines are too important and the automated services usually do it wrong.

If you feel that your website doesn't really need this search engine optimisation process then perhaps consider what it is worth in this way:

The top search engines each charge upwards of $52,000 per year for banner ads tied to a keyword (ie. If your search includes their keyword, their advert gets displayed at the top of the results page). They make it expensive because they know it is effective and valuable.

Now, if you were positioned in the top 10 or 20 results, using web pages that we had optimised and hand-submitted to the top 5 search engines, that would be the equivalent of buying $260,000 worth of advertising per keyword virtually free.

If you're ready to have your website highly optimised for the popular search engines then give us a call now...
